VS Code uses MCP servers in Copilot's agent mode. Its config file looks like other clients' but uses a servers key and a type for each server.

How to add an MCP server to VS Code

  1. Open the server's listing here and copy its VS Code snippet.
  2. Paste it into .vscode/mcp.json (create the file if it is missing), or run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette and follow the prompts.
  3. Open Copilot Chat, switch to Agent mode, and pick the server's tools from the tools list. VS Code shows a start button above each server in mcp.json.

Before you connect one

  • VS Code's key is servers, not mcpServers. Pasting another client's snippet unchanged is the most common reason a server does not load.
  • Use the inputs section of mcp.json for API keys, so VS Code prompts for them instead of storing them in a file you commit.
  • Check the server's safety report first: which tools write, whether a remote endpoint needs auth, and what a package runs when it installs. What the scan checks.

How do I add an MCP server to VS Code?
Put it in .vscode/mcp.json under servers with a type (stdio or http), or run MCP: Add Server from the Command Palette.
Does GitHub Copilot support MCP?
Yes. Copilot's agent mode in VS Code uses the servers in mcp.json, and you choose which of their tools it may use.
Why is my MCP server not working in VS Code?
Check you used servers, not mcpServers, that each server has a type, and that the command runs in your terminal.
