Claude Code adds MCP servers from the command line. One command for a local server, one for a remote one, and a scope flag that decides who else gets it.

How to add an MCP server to Claude Code

  1. Pick a server and open its listing here. The install section has the exact claude mcp add command for it.
  2. Run the command in your terminal. Add --scope project to write it to .mcp.json so everyone on the repository gets it, or --scope user to have it in every project on your machine. The default is this project, for you only.
  3. Start Claude Code, or run /mcp in a session to see whether the server connected. Remote servers that use OAuth ask you to sign in from there.

Before you connect one

  • Claude Code asks before it runs a tool the first time. Allow read tools freely; think before allowing a tool that writes, sends or deletes for the whole session.
  • A server in .mcp.json is code your teammates will run. Claude Code asks each person to approve project servers before using them.
  • Check the server's safety report first: which tools write, whether a remote endpoint needs auth, and what a package runs when it installs. What the scan checks.
