How to add an MCP server to GitHub Copilot

1. In VS Code, add the server to .vscode/mcp.json exactly as in the VS Code guide, then pick its tools in Copilot Chat's agent mode.
2. For the coding agent, a repository admin adds the server as JSON in the repository's Copilot settings. Secrets go in the repository's Copilot environment, not in the JSON.
3. In Copilot CLI, run /mcp add and answer the prompts, or edit its MCP config file.

• The coding agent runs tools without asking each time, so give it read-only servers or tokens scoped to that repository.
