Nelly the Elephant tools (4)

write = sends, deletes, buys or posts

Read from the package source without running it. The installed server may list more.

  • nelly_context

    Get expanded context from a specific session. Use this after nelly_search when the user wants to see more detail from a particular session before resuming it.

  • nelly_instructions

    Check Nelly's status — platform, sessions directory, and whether session data exists. Useful for diagnostics. Instructions are already loaded via MCP init.

  • nelly_recent

    List the most recent Claude Code sessions. Useful when the user doesn't remember specific keywords but knows it was recent.

  • nelly_search

    Search past Claude Code conversations. Nelly searches through all session transcripts for matching keywords and returns sessions with snippets and resume commands. Use multiple searches with different terms for best results (spiral search pattern).

What is Nelly?

Nelly is an MCP server that searches your past Claude Code session transcripts (JSONL files stored in ~/.claude/projects/) and helps you find and resume old conversations. It searches across ALL projects at once, regardless of which project you're currently working in.

Install

npm install -g nelly-elephant-mcp

Add to ~/.claude/mcp_settings.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nelly": {
      "command": "nelly-elephant-mcp",
      "args": []
    }
  }
}

Tools

  • nellyinstructions**: Returns usage guide, platform info, sessions directory status, and diagnostics
  • nellysearch: Keyword search across all past sessions. Supports maxresults (1-100), days_back (1-3650), and project filter
  • nellycontext**: Expanded context from a specific session — surrounding lines around matches
  • nellyrecent**: Lists most recent sessions by modification time. Supports count (1-100) and project filter

Trunk Modes

  • Long Trunk: Conversational, character-driven — Nelly guides you with personality
  • Short Trunk: Just results. Date, project, snippet, resume command.

Say "Nelly long trunk" or "Nelly short trunk" to switch.

Privacy

Zero network calls. Zero telemetry. Zero data collection. Reads only local JSONL files via stdio transport. One runtime dependency: @modelcontextprotocol/sdk. MIT licensed.
