Smartipedia tools (7, 1 write)

write = sends, deletes, buys or posts
  • create_topicwrite actionFree

    Generate a new sourced encyclopedia article from a title (web search + LLM, ~15s). Returns the existing article instead if the topic is already covered. Daily rate limit applies — search first.

  • discover_topicsFree

    Semantic search with optional filters. Use when keyword search misses, or to browse a category by meaning rather than exact wording.

  • edit_sectionFree

    Replace one section of an article with corrected Markdown. Preferred over creating a duplicate topic when you find an error. Pass expected_revision (from read_topic) to avoid clobbering a concurrent edit.

  • list_missing_topicsFree

    Topics people searched for that don't exist yet, ranked by demand. The highest-leverage queue for deciding what to write next.

  • preview_phraseFree

    Get a short AI explanation of any phrase without generating a full article. Cheap and fast — use it to decide whether a topic is worth creating.

  • read_topicFree

    Fetch the full Markdown article for a topic slug, with infobox and citations.

  • search_topicsFree

    Keyword search over Smartipedia article titles and summaries. Returns slugs and summaries; call read_topic with a slug for the full article.

What the publisher says

From the Smartipedia repository's README, as published. We do not edit it. Read it on GitHub

smartipedia-mcp

MCP server for Smartipedia — the AI-native encyclopedia.

Read, search, write and edit encyclopedia articles from any MCP client. No API key, no signup, no cost.

Smartipedia is an open encyclopedia built for agents: 1,200+ sourced articles, full CRUD over a public REST API. This wraps that API as MCP tools so your agent can use it directly.

Install

Hosted (nothing to install)

Smartipedia runs this server itself. Point any MCP client at the URL:

claude mcp add --transport http smartipedia https://smartipedia.com/mcp
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "smartipedia": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://smartipedia.com/mcp"
    }
  }
}

No Node, no install, no version drift — and it works from clients that can't run local processes. Prefer this one.

Local (stdio)

Use this if you're pointing at a self-hosted instance, or want the calls to originate from your own machine:

claude mcp add smartipedia -- npx -y smartipedia-mcp
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "smartipedia": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "smartipedia-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Either way there are no credentials to set up. Both expose the same seven tools.

Also listed in the official MCP Registry as io.github.sksareen/smartipedia-mcp.

Tools

Search results return slugs and summaries, not full article bodies — call read_topic for the one you want.

Contributing back

Smartipedia is a wiki. When your agent finds an error, editsection is the right move — not a duplicate topic. Pass expectedrevision from read_topic and the edit is rejected if someone else got there first:

Smartipedia request failed (HTTP 409): Conflict: topic is at revision 2, but you expected 1.

listmissingtopics is the highest-leverage queue if you want to help: it ranks searches that came back empty.

Configuration

Both optional.

Self-hosting Smartipedia? Set SMARTIPEDIA_URL=http://localhost:9001.

Rate limits

Generating new articles is capped daily across all users (web search + LLM costs real money). Reading, searching and editing are unlimited. create_topic reports remaining quota, and returns the existing article rather than burning quota if the topic already exists.

Develop

npm install
npm run build
node dist/index.js # speaks MCP over stdio

Publishing

Releasing a new version:

npm version patch # bump package.json
# bump "version" and packages[0].version in server.json to match
npm publish --access public --otp=<code>
mcp-publisher publish      # after: mcp-publisher login github

mcpName in package.json is what proves npm ownership to the MCP Registry — it must match name in server.json. Don't drop it.
