Interminal tools (8, 4 write)

write = sends, deletes, buys or posts

Read from the package source without running it. The installed server may list more.

  • connect_ssh

    Establishes a persistent, stateful connection to a remote SSH server, automatically accepting host keys. This session remains active across tool calls, allowing multiple execute commands to run sequentially.

  • create_localwrite action

    Creates a persistent local terminal session (PTY on supported platforms). Starts a local shell process that remains active across tool calls.

  • disconnect

    Gracefully disconnects from an active terminal session (SSH or local) and cleans up all associated resources.

  • executewrite action

    Execute a command in a session (SSH or local). Always use this to run shell commands — there is no persistent shell between calls, so chain state-changing commands with && (e.g. "cd /foo && ls").

  • list_sessions

    List all currently active terminal sessions (SSH and local) managed by this server.

  • read_output

    Read new output from a running command without sending any input. Use this after execute returns status "partial" when the command needs no interaction (e.g. long-running build, training loop, find).

  • respondwrite action

    Send text input to a command that returned status="partial" and is waiting at a prompt. Auto-appends \ if missing.

  • send_controlwrite action

    Send a control key/signal to a running command. Use this whenever a raw control byte or escape sequence is needed — interrupting a stuck command OR driving a TUI (zellij, vim, less, htop, etc.). Prefer this over `respond` for non-printable input: many AI frameworks strip control characters from MCP string arguments, but the string-keyed enum here is always safe.

Interminal

<!-- mcp-name: io.github.QiuwenZheng/interminal -->

Lightweight MCP server that gives AI assistants terminal access — SSH and local shells — with support for interactive and long-running commands.

Installation

# Run directly, no install needed (recommended)
uvx mcp-interminal

# Or install permanently
pip install mcp-interminal

Requires Python ≥ 3.11.

MCP Client Configuration

Claude Desktop (claudedesktopconfig.json):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "interminal": {
      "command": "uvx",
      "args": ["mcp-interminal"]
    }
  }
}

Cursor / other clients: same command + args format above.

Tools

Persistent State

Each execute call runs in an isolated channel — there is no persistent shell between calls. For simple tasks, chaining with && works.

For multi-step workflows (project development, debugging, deployment), a terminal multiplexer (like Zellij) provides persistent state that survives across calls. The AI agent can create a persistent session where cd, environment variables, virtual environments, and long-running processes carry over naturally.

Key Behaviors

  • Stateless execute — each call is an isolated channel; cd /foo does not persist. Simple tasks: chain with &&. Multi-step workflows: use a terminal multiplexer.
  • Long-running commands return status="partial" with a commandid; poll with readoutput or send input with respond
  • SSH PTY is 500×200 xterm-256color so multiplexer sessions render at your actual terminal size

Optional Dependencies

pip install "mcp-interminal[pty]" # Windows PTY support (pywinpty)
pip install "mcp-interminal[ansi]" # ANSI escape rendering (pyte)
pip install "mcp-interminal[pty,ansi]"  # both
