Dock Timelapse tools (9, 1 write)

write = sends, deletes, buys or posts

Read from the package source without running it. The installed server may list more.

  • capture_now

Record the Dock right now (normally done hourly by the agent).

  • current_dock

The apps pinned in the Dock right now, in order (everything after System Settings is ignored).

  • dock_history

Every recorded snapshot: date, day number, apps, and what changed (added/removed/replaced/moved).

  • dock_status

Is recording installed, how many snapshots exist, can we render yet.

  • install_recording

Install the hourly background agent (launchd). screenshots=True also keeps Dock screenshots (requires the user to grant Screen Recording permission).

  • render_frame

Render one frame (PNG) at t seconds so you can see the look before a full render. preview=true uses an invented past ending with today's Dock.

  • render_preview

Render a demo timelapse from an invented past that ends with today's real Dock. Tell the user the history in it is invented. Returns the file paths.

  • render_timelapse

Render MP4 timelapses of the recorded history (needs 2+ snapshots to show change). background: wallpaper = blurred desktop picture, desktop = sharp, white = clean white. out_dir defaults to ~/Movies/Dock Timelapse. Returns the file paths.

  • uninstall_recordingwrite action

Remove the background agent. Recorded history is kept.

Dock Timelapse

<!-- mcp-name: io.github.bcldvd/dock-timelapse -->

Your Dock tells the story of the tools you live in. Dock Timelapse records it quietly every day and turns its evolution into an Apple-style timelapse: apps springing in, others handing over their spot, a day counter ticking, all drawn over your own wallpaper.

Demo render with an invented nine-month history. The real output is 1920×1080 and 1080×1920 H.264 at 60 fps.

How it works

including System Settings). On each day the Dock changes it saves a snapshot: the app list, every icon in high resolution, and the current wallpaper. Optionally it keeps a cropped Dock screenshot too.

  • Records — an hourly background agent reads the Dock's own preferences (the pinned apps, up to and

animations, change labels (+ Linear, Cursor replaces Xcode), the date and day counter, and a progress bar scaled to real calendar time.

  • Renders — the videos are redrawn from that data: a glass Dock over your blurred wallpaper, spring

see your video right away.

  • Previews on day one — preview invents a plausible past that ends with your real Dock, so you can

Requirements: macOS and uv. ffmpeg comes bundled.

Install

Command line

uv tool install dock-timelapse

dock-timelapse install # start recording (hourly agent, one snapshot per day of change)
dock-timelapse preview # see your video now, with an invented past
dock-timelapse render # later: the real timelapse → ~/Movies/Dock Timelapse/
