compute_sample_sizeFreeRecommend a sample size for a control from its frequency, risk and population size, with a documented rationale.
create_engagementwrite actionFreeCreate a new internal-control review engagement. Returns the engagement id used by all later tools.
create_populationwrite actionFreeRegister the population for a control — either an explicit item list or a declared size. Bounded to 10000 items.
framework_integration_checkFreeCheck that all five COSO components have some recorded coverage and that principles are addressed.
generate_reportFreeGenerate a Markdown internal-control review report: scope, risks, controls, testing, workpapers, deficiencies and COSO coverage.
get_activity_logFreeReturn the append-only activity log for an engagement, plus a Markdown rendering.
get_audit_logFreeReturn the append-only audit events recorded for an engagement.
get_componentFreeReturn a single COSO component by id, with its principles.
get_engagementFreeReturn an engagement by id.
get_principleFreeReturn a single COSO principle by framework number or slug, including its paraphrased points of focus.
get_server_infoFreeReturn the server identity, the COSO framework it covers, and the mandatory disclaimer.
get_workpaperFreeReturn a workpaper including its rendered Markdown.
list_assertionsFreeList the assertions used to frame control objectives: completeness, existence/occurrence, accuracy, valuation, obligations/rights, presentation/disclosure.
list_componentsFreeList the five components of the COSO Internal Control—Integrated Framework (ICIF-2013).
list_controlsFreeList the controls registered for an engagement.
list_deficienciesFreeList the deficiencies recorded for an engagement.
list_engagementsFreeList all engagement ids and titles.
list_exceptionsFreeList the exceptions recorded for an engagement.
list_objective_categoriesFreeList the three COSO objective categories (operations, reporting, compliance).
list_populationsFreeList the populations registered for an engagement.
list_principlesFreeList the 17 principles of the COSO ICIF-2013, optionally filtered to a single component.
list_risksFreeList the risks registered for an engagement.
list_scope_itemsFreeList the scope items for an engagement.
list_test_resultsFreeList the test results recorded for an engagement.
list_workpapersFreeList the workpapers assembled for an engagement.
note_exceptionFreeRecord an exception identified during testing, with root cause, impact and any compensating control.
record_test_resultFreeRecord attribute-level outcomes (pass/fail/na) for a tested sample, with an optional conclusion.
register_controlFreeRegister a key control with its type, frequency, linked risks, assertions and COSO principles.
register_riskFreeRegister a risk to objectives, with likelihood, assertions, related COSO principles and a fraud flag.
resolve_review_noteFreeMark a review note resolved on a workpaper.
select_sampleFreeSelect a reproducible sample from a population. Seeded (deterministic) for random/systematic/haphazard; targeted takes explicit references. Records the method, seed and references.
sign_offFreeRecord a preparer or reviewer sign-off. Warns (does not block) if the same person prepared and reviewed.

What the publisher says
From the Coso repository's README, as published. We do not edit it. Read it on GitHub
coso-mcp
An open Model Context Protocol server for internal-control reviews under the COSO Internal Control—Integrated Framework (ICIF-2013). It covers the full review lifecycle — scope → risk assessment → control register → population → sampling → testing → workpapers → review sign-off → deficiency evaluation → report — grounded in the framework's 5 components, 17 principles and points of focus.
(reference + read tools, plus an ephemeral per-session sandbox for the full write lifecycle — nothing persists).
- Local: runs over stdio (npx @simonmak-ascent/coso-mcp).
- Hosted: public endpoint at https://internal-control.ascent-partners.com/mcp
Not audit or legal advice. This server assists with internal-control review
methodology. All workpapers and assessments must be reviewed by qualified
professionals before use in audit documentation.
Why this exists (competitive advantage)
Existing MCP servers either expose a vendor's GRC records (read-mostly, proprietary, product-shaped) or cover ISO 27001 / security controls. None runs a traceable COSO review. coso-mcp is the first COSO/ICFR-native, write-capable, open MCP for the whole lifecycle.
Moat: it is the lifecycle layer, not the data layer — it can sit on top of Workiva/Vanta/Drata rather than compete for their data; its sampling and deficiency math are computed, not improvised; and openness gives zero-friction distribution no gated vendor can match.
